Tip pooling · People

Split the tips the way the shift actually worked — and never keep any.

Card and cash tips pooled across a shift by hours, sales, role weight or an even share; closed once; handed to payroll as a sheet.

What you get

An owner, manager or supervisor cannot be given a share. The law has said so since 2018 and the database enforces it — anyone with admin access is dropped from the candidates, and marking them eligible is refused outright.

Four methods — hours worked, sales rung, role weight, or an even split — chosen per pool.

A pool is previewed, then closed. Only closed pools export, so payroll never pays from figures nobody committed to.

Card tips and cash tips are both in the pool, both in cents.

Closing the night's pool is a shift lead's job; walking out with a file of everybody's earnings needs its own permission.

How it runs

A Friday night, start to finish.

  1. 1

A pool is opened over the shift and a method chosen.

  2. 2

Card tips come off the night's sales; cash tips are entered.

  3. 3

The shares are previewed — a wrong method or a missing name is fixed before anything is committed to.

  4. 4

The pool is closed, and the week's closed pools export as one sheet for payroll.

The questions people ask

Can the owner take a cut?
No, and not by agreement either. It is federal law, and here it is enforced in the database rather than in a policy document — so nothing in the application, and nothing added to it later, can route around it.
Does it work out tax?
No. It works out what people are owed and hands payroll a sheet. It does not calculate withholding and it does not pay anybody.
