Hohenwald is home to the nation's largest natural-habitat refuge for elephants. The sanctuary itself is closed to visitors so the herd can roam in peace, but the Elephant Discovery Center downtown is open to the public and worth the stop.

One of America's great scenic drives passes just east of town — 444 miles of unhurried parkway with overlooks, hiking trails, and history markers. A morning drive on the Trace pairs well with an afternoon on the river.

The explorer of Lewis & Clark fame is buried along the Trace at the site of Grinder's Stand, where he died in 1809. The monument, pioneer cemetery, and surrounding trails make a quiet, moving stop.
